For athletes, the pinnacle of their sport is the World Championships. They don their nation’s vest and vie to be crowned the best of the best in track and field. The title holds as much weight on their CV as Olympic gold.

2023’s edition was no different. From the first event on August 19 to the final one on August 27, the nine days were jam-packed with 49 events. It’s a lot of running, jumping and throwing. But it’s also a chance to see the best of the best in all disciplines.

Those performances can be as jaw-dropping as they are inspiring. Sifan Hassan’s downfall in the 10,000m was one such example, with the Dutch multi-distance star tumbling just metres from the finish line and giving up a potential world record. But she bounced back, claiming bronze in the 1500m and silver in the 5000m.

Athletes from all over the globe gathered in Budapest to compete for glory at the National Athletics Centre. The event was held every two years, between Olympic and World Championships, with selection based on world rankings.
