World Series Highlights

When the Giants swept the Athletics in 1905, the World Series was established as an annual event. It has been played every year since, except 1994 (players’ strike). During that seven-year stretch the Yankees won five of the series.

YELLOW OUT

With his postseason performance coming under scrutiny, embattled Yankees star Aaron Judge stepped up with a pair of big hits in Game 5 to give New York the lead and a shot at a record sixth title. The first came in the first inning, when Judge crushed a first-pitch fastball from Dodgers starter Jack Flaherty 403 feet into the right-field seats.

After the Yankees held a two-run lead in the fifth, the Dodgers rallied with a quartet of runs. They were aided by three egregious errors, starting with center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury’s muffed fly ball and ending with pitcher Gerrit Cole’s blunder on a grounder to shortstop Anthony Rizzo.

A flurry of sacrifice flies and a two-run homer by Giancarlo Stanton put the game back in the balance, but the Yankees’ high-leverage relievers kept their cool and closed out the game.

The World Series is a global stage, and few teams have a bigger international presence than the Red Sox, who won their fourth title in eight seasons in 2019. The team is filled with players from Latin America, Europe and elsewhere who have spent a significant portion of their careers working toward their dream of reaching the highest level of North American professional baseball.
